vicar-general

Ecclesiastical administrative deputy

A vicar-general is a deputy appointed by a bishop or other high church official to exercise administrative authority in their absence or on their behalf.

The position exists primarily in Catholic and Anglican churches.

In religious orders, a vicar-general may serve under the superior general.

The role carries broad jurisdictional powers but remains subordinate to the appointing authority.
