vanity sizing
Dishonest label numbers
Vanity sizing is the practice of labeling clothing with smaller size numbers than the garment's actual measurements, flattering customers into thinking they wear a smaller size.
A dress labeled size 8 today might have fit a size 12 decades ago.
The practice makes sizing inconsistent across brands: I'm a medium at one store and a small at another—vanity sizing strikes again.
