use by date
Food safety cutoff
A use by date is the date printed on perishable goods—especially food—indicating when the product should be consumed for safety or quality.
Unlike a sell by date (guidance for retailers), the use by date is meant for consumers: Check the use by date on the milk.
Figuratively, something past its use by date has outlived its relevance: That excuse is well past its use by date.
