Retailer's removal date
Sell by appears on product packaging to indicate the date by which a retailer should sell the item: Check the sell-by date on that milk.
It's a guideline for stores rather than consumers—products are typically safe to consume for some time after their sell-by date.
Compare with "use by" and "best by," which speak more directly to the consumer.
