unstable equilibrium

Tipping-point balance state

Unstable equilibrium is a state of balance that, once disturbed even slightly, tends to move further from equilibrium rather than returning to it.

A ball balanced on a hilltop is the classic example—the slightest nudge sends it rolling away.

The term appears in physics, economics, and ecology to describe systems poised at precarious balance points: The political situation was an unstable equilibrium, ready to collapse at any provocation.
