unregenerate

Refusing moral reform

Unregenerate describes someone stubbornly resistant to reform or moral improvement—unrepentant and unchanged despite pressure to be otherwise.

The word comes from religious contexts where the unregenerate soul has not been spiritually reborn or saved.

More broadly, it characterizes anyone clinging to old ways or bad habits: an unregenerate smoker, unregenerate in his cynicism.

The tone often carries grudging admiration for the person's refusal to change.
