Beneath-the-surface color
Underlights are a hair coloring technique where dye is applied to the lower layers of hair, hidden beneath the surface.
The effect is subtle until the hair moves or is pulled up, revealing unexpected color underneath.
The term also refers to lights mounted beneath something—a car's chassis, a cabinet, a deck—casting illumination downward: The kitchen underlights give the counters a soft glow.
