Uncommissioned describes something that was not officially ordered, authorized, or assigned by an authority.
An uncommissioned work of art is one the artist created without a patron requesting it.
In military contexts, uncommissioned refers to officers who have not received a formal commission—though *noncommissioned* is the standard term there.
The word also applies to ships or equipment not yet placed into active service: The uncommissioned vessel sat in dry dock awaiting its christening.
