truffle hunters

Truffle hunters are people who search for truffles—prized underground fungi that grow near tree roots.

The work traditionally involves trained dogs or pigs that detect the truffles by scent.

Truffle hunting is especially associated with France and Italy, where hunters guard their productive spots jealously: The truffle hunters set out before dawn with their dogs.
