treelessness

Lacking any forest

Treelessness is the state of having no trees.

The word applies to landscapes—prairies, tundra, deserts—where trees are naturally absent, or to places stripped bare by logging or development: The treelessness of the high plains left settlers desperate for shade and firewood.
