tragic backstory
Hero's formative trauma
A tragic backstory is a character's history of suffering—dead parents, childhood trauma, betrayal—used to explain their motivations or earn audience sympathy.
The term originated in fiction writing but now applies sarcastically to real people who invoke past hardships to justify present behavior: Everyone at the open mic had a tragic backstory.
The modifier tragic often feels obligatory, as backstories in narrative rarely feature happy childhoods.
