trading pits
Open outcry arenas
Trading pits are the octagonal or circular areas on exchange floors where traders once gathered to buy and sell commodities and securities through open outcry—shouting bids and using hand signals.
The stepped design let traders see each other across the crowd.
Electronic trading has largely replaced pits, though a few remain: The Chicago trading pits were once the loudest places in finance.
