A tool rest is a support on a lathe or grinder that steadies the cutting tool or workpiece during operation.
On a wood lathe, the tool rest is a horizontal bar the turner braces hand tools against: Adjust the tool rest close to the workpiece before turning.
On a bench grinder, it's a small ledge that supports objects being sharpened or shaped.
