tiger mother

Strict Asian matriarch

A tiger mother is a strict, demanding parent—typically a mother—who pushes children relentlessly toward academic and extracurricular excellence.

The term gained currency from Amy Chua's 2011 memoir and carries connotations of Asian parenting stereotypes: no sleepovers, no grades below A, hours of piano or violin practice.

Her tiger mother wouldn't let her quit until she mastered the piece.
