ticket barriers
Transit access gates
Ticket barriers are gates at train or subway stations that open only when a valid ticket or pass is scanned, controlling access to platforms.
They ensure passengers have paid their fare before boarding and again upon exit.
In American English, more commonly called fare gates or turnstiles.
I couldn't get through the ticket barriers because my card hadn't been topped up.
