thumbpicking

Bass-note guitar technique

Thumbpicking is a guitar technique where the thumb plays bass notes on the lower strings while the fingers pick melody on the higher strings, creating the effect of two instruments at once.

The style is central to country, folk, and blues traditions: He learned thumbpicking from old Merle Travis records.

Also called Travis picking after its most famous practitioner.
