terrific

Extremely good, informally

Terrific originally meant causing terror—a terrific storm was one to fear.

The word has flipped almost entirely to mean wonderful or excellent: The food was terrific, She did a terrific job.

It can also mean very great in size or intensity: a terrific explosion, terrific speed.

The older frightening sense survives mainly in literary contexts.
