tatamis

Woven rice straw

Tatamis is the plural of tatami, a type of mat used as flooring in traditional Japanese rooms.

Made from woven rush over a rice straw core, tatamis are firm yet slightly yielding underfoot.

Room sizes in Japan are often measured by how many tatamis they hold: a six-tatami room.

The mats also serve as the standard surface for judo and other martial arts.
