taking credit

Stealing someone's glory

Taking credit is claiming responsibility for an accomplishment or success, whether deserved or not.

The phrase often carries a negative connotation when someone claims recognition for work they didn't do: He's always taking credit for other people's ideas.

To take credit where it's due is simply to accept earned recognition: She finally took credit for turning the department around.
