taken for a ride

Fooled by deception

Taken for a ride means deceived or swindled, especially through an elaborate scheme: I paid two thousand dollars for that car and it broke down the next day—I was taken for a ride.

The phrase originated in American gangster slang, where taking someone for a ride meant driving them to a remote location to kill them.

The deception sense now dominates.
