tactical foul
Calculated rule violation
A tactical foul is a deliberate infraction committed to gain strategic advantage, typically in sports like soccer or basketball.
A player may foul an opponent to stop a dangerous counterattack, accepting the penalty as preferable to the alternative: He committed a tactical foul to prevent the breakaway.
The term sometimes extends to calculated rule-breaking in other competitive contexts.
