swinging watch
Mesmerist's focal point
A swinging watch is a pocket watch suspended from a chain and swung rhythmically back and forth, associated with stage hypnotism: The hypnotist dangled a swinging watch before the subject's eyes.
The image is so iconic that it has become shorthand for hypnosis itself, even though real hypnotherapists rarely use the technique.
