supply teacher

Fill-in classroom leader

A supply teacher is a teacher who fills in temporarily for an absent regular teacher—called a substitute teacher in American English.

The term is standard in British, Canadian, and other Commonwealth usage: We had a supply teacher for maths today.

Supply here means providing what's needed to meet a shortage.
