summit climb
Reaching the top
A summit climb is an ascent aimed at reaching the highest point of a mountain, as opposed to climbing partway or traversing routes that don't reach the top.
The term emphasizes the goal of standing on the peak: We attempted a summit climb of Denali but turned back at 17,000 feet.
In mountaineering, summit is both the destination and the measure of success.
