sugar-loaf

Molded refined sweetness

A sugar-loaf is a conical mass of refined sugar, the traditional form in which sugar was sold before granulated sugar became standard.

The shape—a tall, rounded cone with a domed top—gave its name to hills and mountains resembling it: Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro.

As an adjective, sugar-loaf describes this distinctive tapering shape: a sugar-loaf hat.
