subway series
Same-city baseball rivalry
A subway series is a championship matchup between two teams from the same city, where fans of either side could theoretically take public transit to the games.
The term originated in New York baseball when the Yankees faced the Giants, Dodgers, or later the Mets in the World Series: The 2000 subway series pitted the Yankees against the Mets.
It now applies to any same-city playoff contest.
