subsistence economy
Grow your own
A subsistence economy is one in which people produce only enough to meet their own basic needs, with little or no surplus for trade or sale.
Families grow their own food, build their own shelter, and make their own goods.
The term often describes pre-industrial or isolated communities: Many rural villages still operate on a subsistence economy.
It contrasts with market economies, where goods are produced for exchange.
