string up

Hang from above

String up means to hang something by attaching it to a line or support above—stringing up lights, laundry, or decorations.

More darkly, to string someone up is to hang them, especially by lynching: The mob threatened to string him up.

The phrase can also mean to suspend or stretch taut: They strung up a banner across the entrance.
