storm cellars
Underground tornado refuges
Storm cellars are underground shelters designed to protect people from tornadoes and severe weather.
Common in tornado-prone regions of the American Midwest and South, they're typically built into the ground near a house or beneath it: When the sirens went off, we headed straight for the storm cellar.
Also called tornado shelters or cyclone cellars.
