stiffers
Those who skip
Stiffers are people who fail to pay what they owe or leave without tipping.
The term comes from stiff, meaning to shortchange someone.
Restaurant workers complain about stiffers who skip out on checks or leave nothing for service: We had three stiffers tonight—no tips at all.
The word can also refer to corpses, from the slang sense of stiff as a dead body.
