steel guitars

Steel guitars are guitars played horizontally with a metal bar (called a steel) pressed against the strings to change pitch, rather than fretting with the fingers.

The sound is smooth and sliding, central to Hawaiian music and country.

Pedal steel guitars add foot pedals to change tuning mid-performance, enabling complex chord progressions: The pedal steel weeps through the bridge of the ballad.
