sprags

Mining cart brakes

Sprags are wooden or metal props used to prevent movement—especially in mining, where they brace tunnel roofs or block wheels to keep coal carts from rolling.

The singular sprag serves the same function: He jammed a sprag under the wheel.

In British dialect, sprag can also mean a young or lively person, particularly a boy.
