spontaneous ignition
Unprompted catching fire
Spontaneous ignition is combustion that occurs without an external spark or flame, when a material's internal heat buildup reaches its ignition point.
Oily rags and hay bales are notorious for this—oxidation generates heat faster than it dissipates, and eventually the material catches fire on its own.
Also called spontaneous combustion.
