spike up

Rise abruptly upward

Spike up means to rise sharply and suddenly, typically used for statistics, prices, or measurements: Infections spiked up after the holiday.

It also describes styling hair to stand upright with gel or other products: He spiked up his hair for the concert.

The "up" intensifies the upward direction already implicit in spike.
