small of back
Waist's rear curve
The small of the back is the lower portion of the back where it curves inward, just above the hips.
It's the narrowest part of the torso when viewed from behind, hence small: He placed his hand on the small of her back to guide her through the door.
The area is anatomically vulnerable and commonly associated with lower back pain.
