sluffing

Skin flaking away

Sluffing is an alternate spelling of sloughing, used when the verb slough is pronounced to rhyme with "stuff" rather than "slew." It most often describes dead skin or tissue separating and falling away: The sunburned skin was sluffing off in sheets.

In card games, particularly bridge, sluffing means discarding a card from a non-trump suit when unable to follow suit.

The spelling reflects the casual or regional pronunciation that drops the "ough" complexity.
