slave castles
Coastal imprisonment strongholds
Slave castles are the fortified coastal structures in West Africa, particularly Ghana, where captured Africans were held before being shipped across the Atlantic during the slave trade.
Built by European powers from the 15th century onward, these buildings served as trading posts and prisons.
Captives were kept in dungeons—sometimes for months—before passing through the "door of no return" onto slave ships.
Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are the most visited today, preserved as memorials and UNESCO World Heritage sites.
