slam books

Passed opinion notebooks

Slam books are notebooks passed among friends—typically teenage girls—where each page poses a question and participants write anonymous answers about classmates.

Questions range from harmless (Who has the best hair? ) to cruel (Who do you hate? ).

Popular from the mid-20th century through the 1990s, slam books were social currency and instruments of bullying in equal measure, largely supplanted by online equivalents.
