shush gesture

Silent "be quiet"

The shush gesture is the act of holding a finger vertically against the lips to signal silence or quiet.

It's recognized across many cultures as a request to stop talking or lower one's voice: She made the shush gesture and pointed toward the sleeping baby.

The gesture often accompanies or replaces the vocalized "shush."
