shatterproofing

Making glass resilient

Shatterproofing is the process of making something resistant to shattering—treating glass, plastic, or other brittle materials so they won't break into dangerous fragments on impact.

Car windshields undergo shatterproofing; phone screen protectors offer a form of it.

The term extends figuratively to making plans or systems more resilient: We spent months shatterproofing the proposal against criticism.
