seven dirty words

Banned broadcast obscenities

The seven dirty words are a list of profanities that comedian George Carlin identified in a 1972 routine as words you could never say on broadcast television: shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits.

The routine led to a Supreme Court case establishing the FCC's authority to regulate indecent speech on public airwaves.

The phrase now refers broadly to language considered unsuitable for broadcast media.
