session drummer
Studio rhythm mercenary
A session drummer is a drummer hired to record or perform with artists on a temporary, per-project basis rather than as a permanent band member.
Session drummers work across genres and with multiple acts, prized for versatility, reliability, and the ability to adapt quickly to different styles: The album credits list three different session drummers.
Some become legendary for appearing on hundreds of recordings while remaining largely unknown to the public.
