sensitive plants

Leaves fold when touched

Sensitive plants are species that respond visibly to touch or other stimuli, most famously *Mimosa pudica*, whose leaves fold inward and droop when disturbed.

This rapid movement, triggered by changes in water pressure within the plant's cells, has made them popular curiosities in homes and classrooms.

The term extends to other reactive species but almost always evokes the mimosa's theatrical shrinking response.

The kids loved watching the sensitive plant close up when they touched it.
