self-defense force
National guard unit
A self-defense force is a military or paramilitary organization officially designated for defensive rather than offensive purposes.
The term often reflects constitutional or political constraints on military power: Japan's Self-Defense Forces were established under a constitution that renounces war.
The label can be euphemistic—what counts as defense depends on perspective.
