self-association

Connecting with oneself

Self-association refers to the tendency of identical molecules or particles to bind together or cluster with one another.

In biochemistry and chemistry, this describes proteins, lipids, or other compounds that spontaneously aggregate into larger structures: The protein's self-association leads to fibril formation.

The term also appears in psychology to describe the mental linking of oneself with certain traits, groups, or concepts: Her self-association with the activist community shaped her identity.
