screennames
Digital identity labels
Screennames are the names users choose to identify themselves online—on social media, in chat rooms, in video games.
Unlike real names, screennames can be anything: handles, pseudonyms, inside jokes, random characters.
I've used the same screenname since the early internet days.
The term dates from the era when going online meant staring at a screen, distinct from the rest of life.
Also spelled as two words or hyphenated.
