scale practice

Musical finger warmups

Scale practice is the routine repetition of musical scales—sequences of notes ascending and descending in fixed intervals.

Musicians use it to develop finger dexterity, ear training, and familiarity with keys: She does thirty minutes of scale practice before working on repertoire.

The term applies across instruments but is especially associated with piano and string training.
