sand timers

Falling grain measurers

Sand timers are devices that measure fixed intervals of time by allowing fine sand to flow through a narrow passage from one glass bulb to another.

When all the sand has fallen to the bottom bulb, the designated time has elapsed, and the timer can be flipped to start again.

Also called hourglasses, though most sand timers measure much shorter periods—commonly three to five minutes.

We use a sand timer for board game turns.

They remain popular for their simplicity and the satisfying visual of time passing.
