sand crabs

Tiny shore diggers

Sand crabs are small crustaceans that live in the sand of ocean beaches, burrowing rapidly as waves wash over them.

They're also called mole crabs or sand fleas.

The term extends to other beach-dwelling crabs and is sometimes applied to the soft-shell stage of blue crabs.

Sand crabs are commonly used as fishing bait: We dug for sand crabs at low tide.
