safety matches
Friction-ignited fire sticks
Safety matches are matches designed to ignite only when struck against a specially prepared surface, typically the strip on the side of the matchbox.
Unlike strike-anywhere matches, they separate the combustible chemicals between the match head and the striking surface, making accidental ignition far less likely.
The design emerged in the mid-19th century as a response to the dangers of earlier matches, which could ignite from friction against almost any rough surface.
